Dr Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto

Paulo Jorge de Sousa Pinto is a researcher at CHAM – Centro de Humanidades (NOVA FCSH, Lisbon), where he coordinates a thematic research line on “Asia: Peoples, Polities, Exchanges.” He is currently coordinating the set of projects “Portugal-Philippines: Connected Histories,” aimed at promoting contacts and enhancing mutual knowledge between Portugal and the Philippines, namely through the recovery of common historical and cultural heritage. His fields of work include Early Modern Southeast Asia and the European presence in Asia (16^th–18^th centuries) and the Iberian overseas empires. His Ph.D. thesis focused on a comparative approach on the Portuguese and Spanish empires and their roles in Asia. From 2012 to 2017, he developed a post-doctoral project about “Conflict and Collaboration: Presences and Representations of the Overseas Chinese in the Ibero-Asian Societies (16^th–19^th centuries).” He has published several works on these subjects, including The Portuguese and the Straits of Melaka, 1575–1619: Power, Trade and Diplomacy (Singapore University Press, 2012).
