My work focuses on the literary aspects of early American legal documents. My first book was about English colonial treaties with Algonquians and the shaping influence of Native American diplomats on colonial print culture. My current project, tentatively titled Litigating Liberty, is about enslaved plaintiffs suing for freedom in seventeenth-century English and Dutch colonies. Throughout my work, I've been concerned with the manifold ways European and Indigenous legal actors sought to document consent across cultural lines and linguistic barriers.
