Professor Emanuele Conte

Emanuele Conte is Professor of Legal History at the University of Roma Tre and Directeur d’Etudes at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania (2014 : Bok Visiting Professor), University of Wollongong (Australia) (2015); Australian National University Canberra (2015); École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) - Chaire Yan Thomas, Paris, France (2010); EHESS, Paris, France (2008; 2004; 1998); École des Chartes, Paris (2011); École Normale Supérieure Lettres et Sciences Humaines, Lyon, France (2009; 2006); Univ. de Paris X, Nanterre, Fac. de Droit, France (2005); Univ. de Toulouse I, Fac. de Droit, France (2000); Univ. de Paris II Panthéon, Fac. de Droit, France (2000). He has been visiting research fellow at the Max-Planck Institute in Frankfurt am Main (1986-1988), University of California at Berkeley (1990; 1999), Wolfson College, Oxford (2018), Columbia University, New York (2019). He is now senior researcher in the ERC project "Civil Law, Common Law, Customary Law", based at the University of St Andrews (UK). Professor Conte has published 7 books and several dozens of articles in Italian, French, English, German and Spanish, and is the editor of a volume of the series Cultural History of Law (Bloomsbury, 2019). He has recently (2022) delivered an audio course on "Legal History from a European Perspective," freely available online.
